Nowadays, Japanese Idols are became more popular in Japan even overseas, there are several Japanese Idols are growing and made the spotlight in the Japanese Pop scene, there are individuals and also a group, many followers both live and social media focusing on the Idol Group, as the old saying, the more the merrier, yet it is truly happening now. Some Idol Groups today have built their own expansion to their group like what happened to AKB48, not just local sister Idol Groups are made there but also outside Japan, notable sister Idol Group produced outside Japan is JKT48 from Indonesia, as of now, they will produce more Idol Groups overseas similar to AKB48, in this entry, this is all about Idol Group in the Philippines yet it’s a Japanese style with a Filipino twist.
In the Philippines, Japanese Idol Groups are also popular aside from anime, like the golden years that brought Tokusatsu shows and the fanbase is getting grower but it is rarely seen in the mainstream media today, the rumors are heading in this country some years back for having a local Idol Group was a foundation of what is now became an overwhelming dream turned into reality by these 5 cute girls are all by heart, by voice and by nature, they called themselves as Kawaii5. Kawaii5(or simply phrased to the fans as K5) composed of 5 girls are all pure young talented Filipinas namely, Alice, Jelline, Monica, Mae and their leader Venus, each member have their own back stories before they became Idols like they are models, extras on several TV shows, some of them are dancers and singers in their local areas and together, they are all anime enthusiasts, started their debut last May 2015. They started as performers in the local Café-Restaurant, Movie Stars Café in the one of the biggest and popular Shopping Malls in Manila, SM Mall of Asia by this, it will gain their exposure to the public, but on that time, they are only known by less crowd especially customers there, similar to the other Idol Groups on their first days of their careers. It took months until the public exposure is rising up by their debut appearance on TV. Kawaii5 roles as an Ambassadress of 2013 Asadora or “morning drama” series in NHK, Amachan, shown on the local TV Network, TV5 in October 2015 following next their debut TV Show, Hallo Hallo Café, a 5-minute show similar to the Japanese Idol shows with segments like games, mini-documentaries, and raffle prizes given away to the viewers from its online shop, hallohallo.com, a website covered by Hallo Hallo Inc., a Japanese-based IT services hub. Hallo Hallo Café runs 156 episodes following after Amachan also runs 156. Aside from their regular shows every weekdays on TV and every weekends in their live performances they have several guestings like Cosplay events where they are first known to the particular event by promoting on that time of the upcoming premiere show of Amachan, where the show’s actress Rena Nounen speaks in Tagalog to promote her show, Japanese culture-related events notably they appeared on Cool Japan Festival last November 7 and 8, 2015 at Trinoma Activity Center, Trinoma Mall, Quezon City where AKB48 Team 8 and Akishibu Project are the guests on that event, out-of-town shows, also they have guestings and live performances in japan last December 2015, meet-ups to the people both local and foreign communities even in the same line of Idol Groups and JPop artists, last February 2016, Kawaii5 appeared as guests in an NHK show, Shibu Go-ji, a weekly TV show about varieties in Japan regarding the Japanese Pop Culture,. February 20, returning to Manila, their weekend shows at MSC had come unexpectedly announced, the “last show of Kawaii5” in the Café on February 21, the “last show of Kawaii5”is successful but brings an emotional night to Kawaii5 and heading before their departure to Japan, February 27, days after their “last MSC Show”, Nihongo Fiesta at Shangri-la Plaza Mall in Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City, in this event, alongside with them are Diana Garnet, BEATMOTORS and Joe Inoue for their guest performances on that day, this event is Kawaii5’s last performance before heading to japan once again,. March 2016, another journey to Japan, next appearance on Japanese TV this time is NHK WORLD TV’s Tokyo Fashion Express, a weekly fashion magazine TV show also featured Japanese Pop Culture, Kawaii5 joined by renowned Japanese designer Mikio Sakabe, a man behind their signature outfits who also well-known for making outfits to the other Idol Groups, as guest performers once again, they are part in IDL or Icon Doll Lounge held in Harajuku, a fashion capital in Japan, as well as in Fukkonsai, a charity event concert for the people of Fukushima and Tohoku Region where affected by earthquake and tsunami last March 11, 2011 which is inspired to the Asadora, Amachan. On their stay in Japan, marking their exposure to the Japanese people not only in TV but also in several Japanese newspapers and magazines. Recently, last June 2016, they launched their first ever album featuring 4 songs containing covers in Tagalog language, the songs included are “Kawaii5” based from “Koyomi no Ue dewa December” by GMT6 and BabyRaids, “L.O.V.E.” which is the original composition, “Tambayan ng Tropa” used as a Theme Song from their show, Hallo Hallo Café and “Hiling” based on “Jimoto ni Kaerou” by GMT6, used also in Amachan as an Insert Song. “Kawaii5”, their self-titled album ranked No.9 since its launching for 2 weeks by one of the local stores in the country.
Kawaii5 made success both Philippines and Japan, in fact, this group promoting as role models like Japanese Idols especially for teens spreading spirit and girl power attitude like they do on and off the camera, Kawaii5 is less known in the beginning but it is gaining more popularity like for their unique style that many Filipinos are not familiar with that, although by being unique, some people considered themselves as they look like anime characters, cosplayers, Japanese school girls, and any similar to them. According to the leader, Venus, she said that as an Idol Group, AKB48 is an aspiring Idol, she raised an aim when she wanted to become an Idol who could play an active part someday in the two countries (Philippines and Japan). The journey to their dream begins as of late, and looking ahead for their next level of careers as Idols and an Idol Group in years to come. As of today, Kawaii5 is to be considered as first Idol Group in the Philippines and sooner or later, they will be known as one of the first generation of Philippine Idol groups of this era.
