Adaptation and Localization. What's the difference? (By Blitzwing 39)

When it comes to Adaptation. Its story telling shifting from 1 medium to another.1 example would be Nodame Cantabile. From Manga (Print Medium) it adapted into Live Action (Film Medium) then again in Anime (Animation Medium). Despite the changes in medium. The content from Characters, Plot, Settings stay the same from its original Print Medium just going with a few changes. Not as precise to its original form but close enough when it adapted to Live Action and Anime Medium.

Kinda like a person going from one place to another still being the same person just in a different place.Localization on the other hand is re-creating an original work to best conform to its local viewers. Thus, Localization takes effect.1 example is Saban's Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. From its original form Toei's Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. Characters, Plot and Settings are re-created to conform in local standards for its viewers to easily understand the content.

Adaptation is not the right term to be used to label Power Rangers (or any localized, re-created works ex. Masked Rider, VR Troopers) since it doesn't conform with the technical description of what Adaptation stands for. Its due to the content is changed or in other words altered. Since alteration happened, all other affected parts (directly and indirectly) must be adjusted as well.

Let's watch an interview from 1 of the prominent actors in Japanese Live Action. Mr Kenji Ohba. Who played the roles in Super Sentai (Battle Kenya and Denji Blue), Metal Hero (Space Sheriff Gavan).

Back in 2012. He have an exclusive interview with CS Toys International. According to that interview, here is what he have to say and I quote." I feel very honored to be part of Super Sentai series for many roles I have done and now the same series have been localized, re-created and aired in many continues to count the 20th Anniversary." un quote ( found in 9:10 to 9:27 )He stated there that Power Rangers is localized and re-created version of Super Sentai. Coming from someone who has done Tokusatsu all his life, he's the most qualified source on how to define Localization.

I hope that wrap things up about Adaptation and Localization.

Its like a cheap version of a hamburger. Sometimes localized programs are too cheesy and corny. Just like in the US.

Blitzwing39: If only Saban never tampered on how the story flowed from start to finish of Zyuranger when he localized SS in the States as PR. I don't mind him changing the names (Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini and Kimberly ) of the characters and the title (MMPR). Its the flow on how the original story was delivered that was tampered from top to bottom that makes it no longer labelled as Adaptation. Sample. In Zyuranger Geki and Burai are introduced as brothers. In PR Jason and Tommy are just friends. That part is "NOT" faithful as per the original story flow.

Blitzwing39: No offense to Kei Hosogai. I doesn't matter if he watches that show. Shotaro Ishinomori's opinion have more bearing. Especially when he made his review about Saban's Masked Rider. He was " Outraged " on how Saban re-created one of his best works (source: http://henshingrid.blogspot.com/2010/09/shotaro-ishinomori.html). I wish there was also a review he made for Power Rangers before he died. I love to see his reaction on that.

Blitzwing39: A lot of potential got wasted. I know Saban is just following U.S. Censors when he was airing the show. But, that is not an excuse to compromise the work of others in terms of story telling and how it should have flowed as per original story being adapted is concerned. Sample: Hana Yori Dango. Aired in Taiwan (Meteor Garden) and S. Korea (Boys Over Flowers). As it made its transition from Print to Live Action. The only things got changed is the name of the characters and the locations (From Japanese shifting to Taiwanese or Japanese shifting to S. Korean). Despite the transitions. Taiwan and S. Korea remained "faithful to the original story flow" made by Yoko Kamio. It may not be as precise as the original manga but "close enough" worthy to the title of adaptation.

Blitzwing39: Point is Power Rangers doesn't fit the description of adaptation. Not even close. Did Saban remained Faithful from the story flow of Zyuranger? No ! In order for a show to be worthy of the title adaptation. The story flow of Power Rangers should have been at least close enough from the story flow of Zyuranger to be worthy of being called as adaptation.

As I have go further, I made mistakes and overlooked on some of the terms. So, I will correct it here. Regards with Localization, Adaptation and Re-creation. When you say Localization= process of translating a product to any language depending on the place it will be broadcast. You can also combine this to Adaptation and Re-creation as well like Localized Adaptation and Localized Re-creation. When you say Localized Adaptation= having a original product without tampering anything (Character, Plot, Setting) except for the Language audio to be translated to any language depend on the location of broadcast. As for Localized Re-creation= having a product re-created from top to bottom from characters, plot and settings, just retaining a few details (costume, equipment etc.) yet, the Language audio to be translated to any language depend on the location of broadcast. Now that raps up all the overlooked items i failed to add to this article.
